Art Activity- My Love Heart

Materials Needed:

  • Colored construction paper

  • Scissors

  • Markers or colored pencils

  • Glue stick

  • Optional: Glitter, stickers, decorative elements

Preparation:

Heart Template Instructions:

  1. Fold paper in half

  2. Draw half a heart along the folded edge

  3. Cut carefully

  4. Unfold to reveal a symmetrical heart

  5. Draw a line down the middle

  6. Label sides:

    • "How I Feel Loved"

    • "How I Show Love"

Side A: How I Feel Love

Guided Reflection Questions:

  • What are the things people do that make you feel the MOST loved?

  • When do you feel safest with your family?

  • What does someone do that makes you feel truly seen and understood?

  • Who makes you feel like the most important person? Why?

  • What helps you feel calm when you're worried?

You're feeling sad. What helps you feel loved?

  • Gentle hug

  • Encouraging words you wanted to hear

  • Someone sitting quietly with you

  • Small surprise gift

  • Someone to help solve a problem

Decorate the first side of their heart:

Taking all their exploration into account, have them decorate the first side of their heart!

  • Write down the things that make you feel loved

  • Draw moments of feeling loved

  • Use colors that represent different feelings

  • Create symbols of comfort

  • Write or draw about people who make you feel safe

Side B: How I Show Love

Guided Reflection Questions:

  • How do you make others smile?

  • What kind things do you do to help?

  • How do you show you care without words?

  • What surprises do you like to give?

Your friend looks upset at recess. You:

  • Give them a gentle hug

  • Say, "You're so strong, and I'm here for you."

  • Sit with them and listen

  • Offer to help them with something

  • Share a favorite toy to cheer them up

Decorate the second side of their heart:

Taking all their exploration into account, have them decorate the second side of their heart!

  • Draw ways you help others

  • Create kindness symbols

  • Illustrate supporting friends and family

  • Show acts of care and compassion

Be creative! This is THEIR love language after all!

Reflection Questions

  • What surprised you most about creating your love heart?

  • What did you learn about yourself?

  • Were there any feelings that were new or unexpected?

  • What makes you feel the most loved?

  • Can you share one moment when you felt truly special?

  • How do the people who love you show their care?

  • How do you like to show love to others?

  • What's your favorite way to make someone smile?

  • What does caring for others feel like in your heart?

  • Why did you choose the colors you used?

  • What did you learn about yourself while making this heart?

  • What makes you feel proud?

  • How do you take care of your own feelings?

  • How do you show kindness to others?

  • What does being a good friend mean to you?

  • If you could tell your family one thing about how you feel loved, what would it be?

  • What do you wish others understood about your feelings?

  • How can people make you feel extra special?

  • What do you want to remember about love?

  • How do you want to show love in the future?

  • What new things did you discover about yourself?

Sharing Options

(If possible, and if the child wants to, invite the parent or guardian in to talk about their love heart! Or walk them through ways that they can show them their heart later and talk about their love languages.)

  • What makes YOU feel special?

  • How do I make you feel loved?
